Author Guidelines
Studia Islamika, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual (English and Arabic), peer-reviewed journal specializing in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general. The aim is to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asian Muslim history and contemporary developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews.
Scope & Submission Requirements
The journal invites scholars and experts working in all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences pertaining to Islam or Muslim societies. Articles should be:
- Original and research-based
- Unpublished and not under review elsewhere
- Formatted according to journal guidelines (submissions violating formatting rules will be rejected without review)
Article Formatting
- Word count: 9,000–10,000 words (including text, tables, figures, notes, references, and appendices)
- Abstract: 150 words + 5 keywords
- Language: American English (translations required for non-English quotes)
- Citations: Use in-text citations (Author, Year: Page), e.g., (Hefner, 2009a: 45; Geertz, 1966: 114)
- Bibliography: Follow APSA (American Political Science Association) style (use reference managers like Mendeley/Zotero)
Arabic Romanization
Follow the Library of Congress (LC) transliteration system:
- Letters: ʾ, ’, b, t, th, j, ḥ, kh, d, dh, r, z, s, sh, á¹£, á¸, Ṭ, ẓ, ‘, gh, f, q, l, m, n, h, w, y.
- Vowels: Short vowels: a, i, u. long vowels: Ä, Ä«, Å«. Diphthongs: aw, ay.
- TÄ marbūṬÄ: t.
- Article: "al-"
Submission Checklist
Ensure compliance with all items below. Non-compliant submissions will be returned.
- The submission is original and not under review elsewhere.
- File format: OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect.
- URLs for references are provided where available.
- Text is single-spaced, 12pt font, with figures/tables embedded (not at the end).
- Stylistic and bibliographic requirements (see above) are followed.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
Copyright & Licensing
Authors agree to:
- Retain copyright while granting the journal first publication rights.
- License the work under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY), allowing sharing with attribution.
- Archive/preprint the work freely (e.g., in repositories) with acknowledgment.
Privacy Policy
Submitted names/emails will be used solely for journal purposes and not shared with third parties.
